My Final Badges
Summary Of project
The outcome we came up with for this brief was the NEJS. A community scouts program that targets children and preteens and aims to introduce them to sustainability. The program will guide them away from a sedentary lifestyle by encouraging them to engage with nature, by actively exploring what it has to offer, through activities such as camping, gardening and crafting, which will teach them to live together in harmony. The youngsters will also take part in challenges that they will need to overcome together, promoting a sense of community and consequently strengthening community bonds in the area.

Things to do if we get shortlisted
-Research into possible locations where the activities may take place. (location scouting)
-Looking and advertising for volunteers needed (whats this called lol)
-Getting in contact with any guest speakers (people with an indigenous background or knowledge of it)
-Getting to contact with specialists in the activity fields.
-Buying necessary equipment and setting up the work environment.
-Designing and ordering the vests.
-Designing and ordering the badges.
-Advertising the NEJS online.(May involve the creation of a Facebook page) and Even if we don't want to waste paper some posters may need to be put out.
-Visiting schools for support. (Take part in assembly announcements).
-Getting in contact with the local community centre or authorities for the legalities/formalities necessary behind this project.

Generating ideas
Idea 1:
Set up environmental junior scouts.
Aim/Impact: Educating - children in becoming more sustainable.
It is easier to change the way children think rather than older people who are already set in their ways and more stubborn.
This will be a long term change(not short term solution) teaching the adults of the future.
-Influence and set an example for other boroughs that could lead to global coverage and influence other countries. We are setting a trend.
Location: Local Community. The Neighbourhood Environment Junior Scouts NEJS. Each borough will have their own scouts e.g the Tower Hamlets NEJS, Greenwich NEJS.
-As result they will each have a mascot to represent them.(Mascot made from recycling/paper mache.
-The local community centre and schools could work together to possibly manage them?
-The Avery Hill campus has a organic garden.
-Lead to: A growing sense of community, healthy competition, increased involvement.
Activities Scouts will take part in:
-Gardening: On an organic garden where they will learn to grow food in a sustainable way. These ingredients will be used in there cookies/sandwich.
Skills acquired: Respect/appreciation for the environment/nature.
New Info:-Cooking: They will learn to make what they sell door to door/tuck shop, with the ingredients they grow. Cooking will be supervised by adults.
The difficulty of the recipe and level of risk will depend on age and experience. One child does not have to do everything, cooking can be broken down into various tasks/steps. The recipes don't have to be complex learning to make a sandwich can be a good start.
-There will also be parent child cooking sessions to provide them with a fun, relaxing and educational bonding time.
Skills acquired: Respect/appreciation for food and ingredients from knowing how much work goes into producing and making= not be wasteful, while considering health and safety, when using tools and equipment(not everyone will have access to the same things) and the hygienic preparation of food.
Learning to cook will also improve a child’s self-esteem (discover cooking talents), self-reliance, and a healthy lifestyle (They know how to do it and what goes into it therefore they might not opt for junk and frozen food).
-Tuck shop in school playground: They will sell their goods in school playground, using minimum packaging, that can be recycled.
Skills acquired: Improve their communication and team working skills.
New Info: -Recycled Material Collectors: They will collect recycling materials from their homes, which they will use for arts and crafts. The more you bring the better, children who are actively promoting a recycling culture within there families (shown through the amount of materials they bring) will receive a collecting badge.
-Health and safety the materials they collected must be clean to avoid contamination.
Skills acquired: Child will learn the value of these materials and think twice about wasting and throwing them away, much like how we don’t throw away money which is basically paper and metal=materials.
OLD-Recycled Material Collectors: They will collect recycling materials from their neighbourhood. This could be a form of payment for their brownies/cookies/sandwiches each item could correspond to a recycled item e.g 1 brownie= 1 plastic bottle.
-Health and safety the materials they collected must be clean to avoid contamination.
Skills acquired: Child will learn the value of these materials and think twice about wasting and throwing them away, much like how we don’t throw away money which is basically paper and metal=materials.
-Craft Making/guests workshops: They will use the materials they collected to create new things.
New Info: Crafting class will also include some special visits from indigenous/ aboriginals/amazonian tribe people that have a connection with nature and will teach the kids about their heritage/traditional crafting techniques and how it is to live surrounded by nature.
Skills acquired: Boost their creativeness and resourcefulness. New Info:Broaden their horizons with new knowledge about different cultures.
New Info: Trips/Camping: The children will take part in trips to parks, forest, farms etc, places were they can connect will nature. This includes one day trips as well as a few days camping.
Skills acquired: The best way to understand, appreciate and respect the environment is to experience it and get involved with what it has to offer, see the beauty of it first hand. The children will also learn other skills that can help them in the wild such as building fires (in a safe way), build rafts, tents and what plants are edible and which or poisonous. They will also become familiar with how food is produced by visiting farms and seeing the production process and growth of vegetables and fruits etc.
Show and tell for games and toys: Children are encouraged to introduce new toys or new games to the rest of the scouts. Mini competitions could be held regarding the play. Some of these toys could be remade using the recycled materials in the arts and crafts session.
Skills Acquired: encourage involvement with play rather than the screen.
Rewarding system:
-The children's’ hard work will be rewarded through badges they can gain by taking part in activities.
Supervision:
-Volunteers/Teachers - adult supervision for under 18s.
-Older/past NEJS(senior NEJS) aiming for a legacy.
New Info:-Trips will be accompanied by specialist guides that know how to preserve the health and safety in that location.
Identifying existing problems:
Problem: In primary school is the amount of scrap paper (lets be honest almost everybody prefers a new sheet of paper rather than the remains of a sheet of paper that has been cut with glue and pencil marks) and materials not being used in a sustainable and smart way (such as cutting using the tessellation method) in arts and crafts. Papers and cards being wasted and thrown away.
Solution: Teach students to reach for the recycled materials that they have collected and turn them into something new, turn something that is seemingly useless into something useful in the arts and crafts session.
Problem 2a: Not everybody admits that global warming/pollution is an issue and that being sustainable is necessary.
Problem 2b: In this generation children spend too long on phones, tablets, game consoles and TV. They are less active and play less outside compared to in the past, which could be because of weak community bonds where parents believe its safer for their kids to remain in doors.
Solution: The NEJS offer parents a safe and educational opportunity for their kids to become more active outside and be more involved with the community(both child and parents) because of the increased sense of community, there is more trust in letting them play outside. Although the parents may not necessarily care about the environment they can still find the benefits of the NEJS for their kids appealing. Plus the NEJS will appeal to kids as well since it will look fun with the uniform, badges and activities. Consequently the parents may learn from their kids.

Idea 2:
Eco-friendly local playground. Features: -The seesaw/spinning seesaw will make use of the kinetic energy(reusable) generated by the motion to play a nursery rhyme/ new lyrics or whole new song about helping the environment, that kids can listen to and join in while they play. Result: The song will be catchy and the child will learn something from the lyrics from singing it. -Other play activities zip line, and swing. -Made from: Recycled materials such as MDF. e.g the playhouse could be made from coloured plastic/glass bottles/bottlecaps (sanitised and health and safety checked) The aesthetics will be bright and fun reminiscing the book of life (animated movie). |

Sustainability Hub Fellowships Programme - Project (Challenge Booklet notes)
-While developing your project proposal, you will have to work with and propose solutions for one of the 11 challenges or a combination of them.
-They have offered examples of projects for the challenge. We can use those examples as support and develop it OR come up with our own idea.
-Sustainable development doesn’t work well as a call to action thing. Art used as a way of getting this concept under people’s skins, with interesting/abstract ways of getting message across. (Example idea:Creating an art project out of 100% recycled or waste items.)
-Example idea: Develop a pilot project for an exchange currency based on trading services and unused goods which could be used within the University or in a local community.
-Example Idea: Develop an urban gardening concept aimed at the small-scale production of fruits and vegetables in an urban setting.
-Example Idea: Establish a student gardening community and create a garden space, which could have an education, production and leisure function.
